Our Story

The historic town of Hillside is a 9-acre property anchoring the north end of the Wet Mountain Valley, just 12 miles north of Westcliffe on Hwy 69. This property has served as a local community hub for the Hillside ranching community since the early 1900’s and is marked by a brown and yellow “Hillside” sign at the entrance to the property.

Hillside’s famous post office resembles a small house from a century back, with a front porch, white siding and green trim. Not only did it continuously send and receive mail until recently, it was also a meeting place for locals to catch up over a cup of coffee.

A grove of historic black willow trees, rumored to be the oldest in the state, shade the post office and nearby Hillside Hall, once the most hopping dance hall in the valley and a celebration hub for locals, it is now a refurbished venue for both private and public events – welcoming newcomers and old-timers to make memories that will last a lifetime.

Five beautifully renovated vacation rental cottages are on-site and available for individual or group reservations. These buildings were repurposed and restored from structures previously relocated from a local mining site, and highlight the original wood floors and beautiful wood beam structures of days gone by.

Today, the town of Hillside is best utilized as a gathering place for small groups or large. A place for people to connect, reconnect, and find solitude, peace, restoration. A place to slow down and enjoy life in the present.

Weddings, reunions, and other public or private group events up to 100 guests are best hosted under the canopy of the Black Willow Grove and inside the beautifully restored Hillside Hall. Enjoy private access to the entire property, during the event where up to 18 event guests will stay overnight in the five cottages, making this scenic private property the perfect setting for life-long memory making.

Spent 3 nights at the Hillside House. A peaceful paradise for spring break. 4 adorable roomy bedrooms, 2 large bathrooms with showers in modern decor. Spotless. Fully furnished kitchen open to family room. . Beds very comfortable. Wild turkeys in the morning & night came from nearby fields to eat & we watched from house. Can sit on front porch facing west to the mountains at happy hour. Able to catch hiking trail about 4 miles west. Shopping coffee grocery etc in nearby in Westcliffe. Can sneak in trip to Royal Gorge on way to if coming from Colorado Springs. This house is away from road so no traffic noise. Highly recommended by our group of 7

We happened upon Hillside cottages and we couldn’t have been happier for our restful and authentic Colorado escape. The cabin (Knack for Nature) was just perfect for the two of us and our pooch. The kitchenette was fully stocked and offered all we needed plus a little welcome basket! We arrived in a snowstorm so we weren’t able to make our hike, however exploring Canon City and the gorge along with a drive through Westcliff gave us a pleasant feel for this part of our state. And beautiful it is!!! Looking forward to a return in the spring. And, the Hillside history and how these building have been preserved is incredible. Thanks!!

We stayed only one night and I wish it had been longer. Our quaint little cottage had everything we needed and more, it was really clean and well equipped. Be prepared with your food and beverages as the beauty of this place is that it’s not really close to anything which was just what we wanted. The stars in this dark sky area were amazing! I would love to go back.

We had a really fun time using Splendid Vista as our base for exploring the Sangre de Christo Mountains and the Wet Mountain Valley. Not only did we enjoy the area, but because we stayed in Hillside we enjoyed their beautiful grounds and spent a number of afternoons enjoying the gardens, outdoor games and willow grove. Lucky to have stayed and we would recommend it highly.
